Super Bowl Snack Cookies

Super Bowl Snack Cookies

We are not really football fans in our house, but we are always up for a get together and for yummy, snack foods, so when our friends invited us for a Super Bowl party last year and again this year, we were eager to attend.

Both years, I wanted to make sugar cookies as one of our fun food contributions (last year I also made pizza pull apart bread, pizza pinwheels, creamy corn dip, and buffalo chicken dip, and this year I also made guacamole deviled eggs and a spicy black bean, corn, and avocado dip), and deciding how to decorate them was lots of fun. There are so many fantastic ideas out there for the Super Bowl and football in general, so I made some football themed cookies, but what I was really excited about were the cookies I made that resembled some favorite snack foods.

Last year I saw a cookie deli platter and wanted to give it a shot, mostly because of the super cute pickles! I loved how the cookies looked like a totally different food, and the kids had fun deciding which type of cheese or meat to eat. Their favorites were definitely the pickles and crackers!

All of the colors for the cookies were made with Americolor gel colors, and I generally followed the colors suggested in the inspiration blog post:

  • crackers = warm brown, chocolate brown, egg yellow
  • swiss cheese = no color added to plain white royal icing
  • pepperoni/salami = super red, warm brown, with spots of the bologna pink
  • cheddar cheese = orange, egg yellow
  • bologna = tulip red, ivory, pink
  • pickles = leaf green, egg yellow, with the lighter accent shade made by lightening this with white

This year I knew I wanted to make some more Super Bowl snack food cookies, and my first thought was to make pizza cookies. These were some of the first sugar cookies I pinned on Pinterest, and I never thought I’d ever be able to make something like them. All of the kids at the party went straight for them. It’s amazing how even though all the cookies tasted the same, pizza was still the kid favorite!

All of the colors for the cookies were made with Americolor gel colors:

  • cheese = ivory
  • crust = ivory, warm brown
  • pizza sauce = super red, warm brown
  • olives = super black
  • red onion = burgundy, regal purple, maroon
  • green pepper = leaf green
  • mushrooms = ivory, warm brown, super black (without the black, they had too much of a yellow hue)

I had seen some chips and salsa and nacho sugar cookies and thought they’d make a great Super Bowl snack food cookie as well. I debated whether to just put a splash of cheese on each bare cookie triangle like Oh Sugar Event Planning or to do an icing background of the chip like Sweet Sugarbelle. Roy encouraged me to do a chip background, and not to skip the dark brown spots, and as usual, I am glad I listened to him! I thought the jalapenos were such a genius addition and decided to go one step further and add some olives, tomatoes, and green onions, too – that’s how I like my nachos!

The last snack food I decided on was a tray of deviled eggs. I love deviled eggs. Not everyone does, but I do! And I thought it would be fun to make real deviled eggs and deviled egg cookies for the same event! I wish I would have had some petal dust in an appropriate color to sprinkle over the yolks like paprika, but I decided it wasn’t worth a trip to the store just for that. Next time! My kids were pretty excited by the pile of icing ‘yolk’, but most of the other kids at the party weren’t tempted by the eggs at all! I made sure to drop some off for Lindsey and Charlie because the two of them are on complete opposite ends of the deviled egg loving/hating spectrum, but they both love sugar cookies! I am still waiting to hear if Charlie could be convinced to try one!

I am already thinking ahead to what snack food cookies to make for the Super Bowl next year! If you have any ideas for me, let me know! I’d love to start gathering some inspiration now.

    these are my favourite cookies ever!

    i remember watching something about how we ‘eat with our eyes’ and how people react to familiar foods/flavours when they are served in unfamiliar forms – it doesn’t surprise me that the kids weren’t tempted to try the eggs – and i bet charlie didn’t either! (i would have gobbled them up… i love deviled eggs AND cookies!)

      They might be my favorites, too! I love them.

      Charlie did eat an egg!

    I saw the photos of these the other day and thought they were oh so clever. I would never have the patience to do what you do.

      I need to get a little more patience for some of these projects – always wanting to rush things!!

      Sad you missed it, too. Will have to make some fun cookies for something else soon, instead!

    Becky, we were completely blown away by your cookies! Could not believe the addition of the tiny olives & jalapeños to the nachos! So fun! And like you said, the kids could not wait to dive into the pizzas! So creative AND delicious! I have to say that since I liked the icing so much, the deviled eggs might have been my favorite! 😉 Thanks for all the time you put into making everything!

    • Becky {Rebecca Cakes & Bakes}

      I will have to make you the deviled eggs again sometime, Jenny 🙂

    Those cookies were awesome!! I love how the kids would still pick pizza cookies over the deviled egg cookies! Also funny how Mikkel insisted I piled on all the toppings onto his nacho cookies. Such fun and super yummy!! Thank you!

    • Becky {Rebecca Cakes & Bakes}

      I forgot that Mikkel wanted all the toppings on his nacho cookie!

      Let me know if you can think of something fun I can make next year!

      These ones didn’t take as long as I thought they would. Always a pleasant surprise!
