Large Pink Peony Cake Toppers

Peonies

posted in: Blog | 12

As I mentioned here, recently I was very honored to make some peonies to decorate the wedding cake of a friend’s sister. I easily found many online tutorials and inspiration photos for various styles of peonies; however, I didn’t see as much to help me with the calyx. In addition, I found many different pictures of shapes and compilations of leaves, but wasn’t sure which style to choose.

In the end, I used this photo to help me formulate a plan to make the calyx and decided to do leaves in groups of three to direct my leaf creation by using the small calla lily cutter from the Wilton Gum Paste Flower Cutter Set. I do think it would be nice to get this leaf cutter set for when I make peonies again in the future.

For the calyx, this was my process:

  1. I used the Small Rose cutter from the Wilton Gum Paste Flower Cutter Set to get my initial shapes.
  2. I used the lifter/knife tool from the Wilton 8 piece Modeling Tool Set to separate the individual petals.
  3. I used the Orchid Throat cutter from the Wilton Gum Paste Flower Cutter Set to give the petals some shape.
  4. I used the impression mat from the Wilton Course 4 kit to give some texture.
  5. I used the ball tool from the Wilton 8 piece Modeling Tool Set to soften the edges.

And how it looked in the end:

Next time, I would trim the shape of the bottom of each so they fit together differently, but I was very pleased with how they turned out and how they made the all of the peonies look finished.

My friend, Jenn, sent me these photos of the finished cake (the cake was baked and decorated by Sunrise Bakery in Turlock, CA)

Congratulations to Cindy & Joey!

Absolutely gorgeous and so lifelike! I am anxiously waiting for my peonies to bloom in the garden, but they won’t be nearly as perfect as these. BTW, if you need photos of peonies, I have some good ones.

These were so beautiful and perfect for my sister’s cake. Everyone loved the cake. I still can’t believe they made it all the way to California with no mishaps!

I am so happy that they were able to travel so well and that I was able to be able to be a part of your sister’s special day!
