As many of you may know, at the end of May, our home flooded with 18 inches of water and we were forced to move out. For a few weeks, we lived in our friends’ garage apartment, and then we leased an apartment of our own. I lost some baking things in the flood, but once I managed to buy some new cooling racks and replace the baking pans and flour and sugar I lost, I eventually got back into doing a little bit of baking in July. In August, I had the opportunity to pull out some fondant for cakes and to make royal icing for cookies for the first time since May!
Breads & Muffins
It should be of no surprise that the very first thing I baked in the new apartment with the new oven was my go-to Banana+ muffins. I figured they were a good way to test out how the oven performed! In August, I made our favorite cornbread, which is another tried and true recipe.
Cakes & Cupcakes
It was our anniversary in August, so for dessert I made a raspberry peach breakfast cake with some delicious fruit we had at home. The recipe was fantastic! My first foray back into cake decorating was when I made Sylvie’s under the sea mermaid cake (details here). Next up was a Spiderman cake.
Cookies
As outlined in this collection, I made some butterfly sugar cookies for Leighton’s return to school for second grade. I also made some football sugar cookies. I had made mini football cookies last year, but these were my first full size ones.
Decorations & Toppers
For Syvlie’s cake, I made a mermaid cake topper and some varied under the sea cake toppers. Extra pictures and inspiration details are here. I also made a number 5 topper in the same colors as the other toppers. I was really pleased with how the Spiderman cake topper and Spiderman font name topper turned out.
Other Goodies
I made the same recipe for peach cobbler I’ve made several times before, but this time it just didn’t work. I still can’t figure out why! The taste was good, but I wasn’t happy with how it baked.
Brenda
Hi Rebeccah, could you tell me where to purchase the grey owl with graduation cap – cake topper? I need one of these for a graduation cake for my son by next Friday, May 13th, and wondered if I could order it from you or if you could direct me where Icould purchase one. Thanks so much, Brenda Mizell

Hi Brenda,
Thank you for contacting me about the cake topper. I had made that for a friend’s graduation a couple of years ago, and I am unsure where you would find one similar local to you. I would recommend checking with any local bakers and bakeries to see if they have anyone who could make one for you.
